Today, we decided to explore 集美学村 (Jimei School Village) by taking the city metro, which crosses the straits into mainland China. This area is a cluster of schools that were primarily built in the 1900s by overseas Chinese immigrants, prominently led by Tan Kah Kee. The architecture of the schools reflects a distinct Nanyang style, blending traditional Chinese elements with influences from Southeast Asia.
Our visit included the Tan Kah Kee Museum, located within Jimei School Village. The museum offers a comprehensive look into the life and legacy of Tan Kah Kee, a prominent Chinese businessman, philanthropist, and educator. Originally from Jimei, Fujian province, Tan Kah Kee made his fortune in Singapore and became a pivotal figure in fostering education, community development, and cultural exchange between China and Southeast Asia.
The museum showcases Tan Kah Kee's contributions across various fields, including education, where he established numerous schools and universities both in China and Singapore. Exhibits feature personal artifacts, photographs, and documents that illustrate his entrepreneurial ventures, philanthropic endeavors, and advocacy for Chinese education and culture. Interactive displays provide insights into his life story, from his early days as a businessman in Singapore to his later efforts in promoting education and social welfare.
As Singaporeans, visiting the Tan Kah Kee Museum held special significance for us, deepening our understanding of his enduring legacy and the historical ties between Singapore and China.
After the
museum, we ventured to a scenic stretch along the coast known as 十里长堤 (Shili Changdi), which translates
to "Ten-Mile Long Embankment." This picturesque promenade runs
alongside the coast, offering stunning views of the sea and the skyline of
Xiamen. We stumbled upon a vibrant night market with its brightly lit tents and
food stalls operated out of the car boots. The cars were colourfully decorated
creating a lively and bustling atmosphere. The market offered a wide array of drink,
traditional snacks and desserts. It was a delightful experience to stroll
through the market, sampling different foods and soaking in the festive
ambiance created by colorful lights and the chatter of visitors.
